DIFFERENCE

DIFFERENCE

Shoah Memorial competition, 2016
Bologna, Italy

Do we really want to remember?

Memory is a matter of identity, a human condition torn apart during the Shoah.

Different faith, different thought, different history, different love, different colour, different mind.

This is a story about Difference, a story beginning from the idea of Difference and ending to men

frightened by the awareness of that idea.

Three different gestures in the space:

– Jews (or hate against different Faith);

– political opponents (or hate against different Thought);

– homosexuals (or hate against different Love).

Three oblique surfaces that symbolize the different destinies who were forced to converge into death.

This destructured pyramid restores, for those destinies, the freedom to stand next to each other,

the dignity of existence, the right to rise up together to the sky, towards the stolen future.

From the gravity of memory to the lightness of the air, the three oblique surfaces rise up. Yet, it is still

possible to see three scars in the matter looking at the pyramid from the outside; but those scars

become three rays of light when entering inside.

The names of victims slip upwards on the wall towards the sky.

The interior of this mausoleum is an open urban shelter, a breathing space in the chaos of the dynamic

flows of the city, a place outside the crossing lines of people, cars and trains.

The pyramid base is inscribed in a 20 m diameter circle. The highest surface is made of clear glass and reaches

the height of 20 m. The second one is a brut concrete wall of 15 m height. The smallest surface is

a black marble slab of 10 m height. In the middle, a large hexagonal stone water basin collecting the rain.
