Pedestrian bridge competition, 2020
Chiampo VI, Italy

Concept

The crosswalk of the state road and the connection to both the existing and the new planned cycle-pedestrian paths along Via Pace and the Chiampo river are proposed through a single element of organic inspiration, which is both a bridge and a ramp at the same time: it is a sinuous movement, a flexible gesture, a spiral embrace projected towards the surrounding territory.

Dimensions

The entire structure, with its complex geometry, has a linear development of approximately 200 meters to ensure a maximum slope of 5% at every section of the path. It reaches a maximum height of 5.90 meters (calculated at the extrados of the walkway) to provide a useful clearance height on Via Pace of 5.30 meters (calculated from the road pavement to the intrados of the walkway). The net width of the cycle-pedestrian lane is 2.50 meters, while the maximum width of the walkway section at any point is 2.80 meters.

Materials

The walkway is entirely made of CorTen, a material with high mechanical strength and long-term durability with reduced maintenance costs, thanks to its self-protecting patina. The chromatic nuances and the non-uniform texture of the natural patina facilitate a harmonious integration into both the natural and urban landscapes. Furthermore, CorTen steel is a sustainable and fully recyclable material, maintaining its properties unchanged through multiple recycling cycles.
